- Elevators: Elevators control pitch, or the up-and-down movement of its nose, on the horizontal stabilizer of the tail. Lifting the nose causes the aircraft to climb. Dropping the nose causes the aircraft to descend. Taking off, landing, and maintaining level flight all require pitch control.
- Rudders: A rudder controls yaw, the side-to-side movement of the aircraft’s nose, located on the vertical stabilizer. During turns, rudders keep the aircraft stable and prevent unwanted yaw, but they can also make coordinated turns. By moving the rudder left or right, the aircraft’s nose swings in corresponding directions.
